Hi All,
My name is Jim and I am  a new member.
I have just purchased my first Vauxhall since the 1970's. Since then I have always driven Fords. My last car was a Ford Granada Scorpio 24v Cosworth.
But I thought I needed a change so I bought this week an Omega MV6 Elite 3.0 2000.
Its done 50k miles and I would like your advice on a few aspects.
As far as I know the cambelt hasnt been changed so that is my first job to be done. I have had a quote from my local Vauxhall dealer of £320. Do you advise to have this done at a main dealer or would it be OK for a smaller garage to do the work for a cheaper price?
The car was fitted with Satnav from new but only has the original CD-ROM. So I want to update to the latest disc but have been quoted £95 by Navteq. Is there a cheaper way of doing this? Does anyone else supply these discs cheaper?
Any info will greatly appreciated.

Hi Jim

welcome to the site - have a look around and enjoy.

Cambelt - an essential job on any car but even more so on omegas. £320 is a bit dear indepandant. Shop around and ensure its cambelt as well as tensioners ( the important bit on an omega as they are more prone to failure)

Or do it your self, hire a cam locking kit, buy the £3 dvd on here and ask if your unsure - you will get it done and you will get assistance from us Thumbs Up!

Hi Jim,

welcome to the forum - does the car have a service history? It sounds very much like mine - which didn't - so I changed the cam belt and tensioners ASAP (they should be done every 40k or 4 years, whichever comes sooner). However I reckon the ones that were on there weren't the originals - but at least now I know it's definitely been done - and set up right.

Note that Vx have a target time to do the job in, so the timing won't necessarily be spot-on. At least one of the moderators on here had a flat spot (at 2 or 3k RPM) from when the belt and tensioners were done by Vx, apparently when they replaced them later (instead of Vx) a cam was found to be one tooth out - the replacement was fitted and timed up correctly and the flat spot disappeared ...  Smiley

Independents will probably charge about £250-ish to do the job, might be worth getting the water pump done too (about another £30).
