Question on cambelt change
16. Jun 2007 at 16:21

Just checking my new cars cambelt etc. Followed the DVD which is excellent. Got to the point on rotating the engine to line up the timing markings.

I am about three teeth from line up and the engine does not seem to want to rotate any further. I have not forced it until I get some advise.

I know it might be the compression but it really it resisting.

Should I remove the plugs?

Any advise welcome.

Thanks

If you have good compression, the engine will be stiff... I use a BIG ratchet when turning the V6 crank Grin

Have you got the timing locking kit?

If you don't... DO NOT attempt to do anything with cambelt...

You can't "check" a cambelt, if history is unknown or questionable, you must replace the whole kit.

If the crank is TDC, but 3 teeth out on cams, you may have piston touching valve  Shocked

NOT a nice thought...

Ong, have you adjusted the belt at all, or rotated the crank anti clockwise?

No. Only looking and lining up ready for camlocks. Crank is not lined up yet either.

Tried to move it with torque wrench but still didn't feel happy. Like I say it may be compression but this is the first time I done this so I wanted advise before proceding.

The heads were repaired about 2000 miles ago and every thing looks new. I may still change everthing anyway.

Posted recently about rattling/tapping from top end of engine which is why I am checking evrything before selling my trusty 2.0l.

James, Sorry about your gearbox. Hope your mobile soon. I may be needing you.

Any other advise.

John

It's extremely hard to diagnose this one, without seeing it.

It MAY just be compression, but on the other hand, when the crank is approaching TDC that close, it shouldn't be that hard to turn...

you could remove the plugs, and CAREFULLY turn the crank, and see if it feels OK

Check all marks are lined up before firing her up

I have a locking kit I can lend you... but I would need it back pronto...

Thanks James but I am snowed with work next week so will not be looking at this until week after. I will email when ready, but I know Autovaux loan locking kits when you buy there belt kits.

I will remove the plugs to to see if that helps.

If I get any further problems I may give you a call.

One point to add is that I've seen conflicting info about removing the plugs when doing the cambelt.

Makes it easier to turn the engine over, but I understand you should have some compression to set the belt tension correctly - i.e. don't remove plugs...

One stupidly obvious point - but it's not in gear is it?

Well what a thingy!

Didn't even think about it being in gear. Looking through the window and there it is in first gear.

Thanks for the help.
