cam belt question
01. Oct 2007 at 15:02

Only me!

was doing some research last night as to when i bought my Omega
bought it on 23rd February 2003 from a Car Dealer in Aylesbury
when i picked it up, it had done 42740 miles
its now 1st October 2007 and its done 61930 miles
so i have done 19190 miles in 4 years and 8 months  Grin
as you can all see, hardly used at all

my question is, does the cambelt need doing?
i checked its history and it was changed at 40,000, tensioners etc
was done by Vauxhall Main dealer in Bedfordshire back in October 2002

thoughts guys?

So up to a year to go....

BUT better safe than sorry, so I would start 'thinking about it'

If it was changed in 2002 it's now overdue (over 4 years), or have I missed something?

I'd get it done now.

the belt perishes with time or over usage! not both!

Look at it another way....can you get a cambelt failure fixed easily?

I know vaux did double the intervals for a while, but reverted due to premature failure.

If that includes the kit then not too bad - ive heard worse. May be worth getting the water pump done while in the area....its a £30 part and sods law dictates it will go weeks after  Roll Eyes although its not belt driven on v6`s.

YEAH, £336 was everything, all the parts and labour etc

if i ask for a waterpump change aswell, what are we talking in extra labour do we think?

Well its only a 5 minute job to change when its stripped down to do the belt but does then need a refill of coolant.

No harm in that, i know this sounds like the bill is increasing, but it is in an area not to be messed with. If they quote any more than 1 hour then its creative, the water pump is 3 bolts whilst doing the belts.

Coolant change just in time for winter  Thumbs Up!

If they quote more than an hour then they are not allowing for the fact that you have already paid them for the strip down to do the belt - a large part of both jobs.     When you ask them for a price, say something like 'presumably its a quick job as you've already got it stripped down..' then they will know that you know what you're talking about.. Wink

BTW - my car came from Gurneys originally!

It may be too far for you but DK Cars in Thatcham do some service work.  I think they quoted me sub £250 for a cambelt/tensioner change in the past.
