Chattering at tick over

2.5TD '00.  starts to "chatter" between tick over and 1,000 rpm. Always stops when the revs are raised even by the smallest amount. Sometimes it stops when clutch is depressed, but not always.

If left this "chattering" can get quite violent with the whole engine block rattling.

What the....???

This "Chattering" is more prominent when the car is facing downhill..even slightly.  Seems to start when it drops below 900rpm and stops when revs drops down to an even idle, then slowly starts to appear and increase in vibration.  Also at a crawling pace the clutch has to be ridden to keep the chattering at bay.
