Thinking about purchasing an Omega

Hi. I know that I am contacting the converted, but most solid forums (and this appears to be one) will usually give a pretty un-biased approach to this sort of question. I am considering purchasing an 03 Reg Vauxhaul OMEGA 2.6 V6 24V ELITE Automatic estate, with 50k miles on the clock. Is there anything I should be wary about? It has full dealer service history and a cam belt change at the last service and seems to have all the whistles and bells, such as cruise control, rain sensing windscreen wipers, electric seats and all the things that can go wrong. I currently own a W reg Vectra sri, which I have had for 5 years. I have kept it fully serviced and have had absolutely no problems with it. Thus my desire to stay with Vauxhaul

I felt inclined to modify the text, because I did not want to be inundated with members trying to get their hands on my rain sensing mirrors if I do buy the car. Wink

Welcom to the forum Thumbs Up!

Omega's are a lot of car for the money, yes there are certain things that go wrong but a lot of them boil down to not being serviced properly.

V6's get oil in the spark plug wells, when then breathers haven't been cleaned out the Cam Cover Gaskets give up, then the oil finds its way in to the spark plug wells...
Cambelt and Tensioners need changing every 40,000 miles or 4 years whichever comes first... about £350 at Vauxhall, so just check that it had tensioners as well as the Cambelt fitted..
At 50,000 miles it isn't even run in

And when you do get a problem there are some great guys on here 24/7 to give their help.

Sounds like the sort of thing that lots of people on here would give their right arm for. You don't say what sort of money they are asking and that would obviously have a bearing on the desirability. Shame about the main dealer service history although I wouldn't let that put you off too much.

Having said that, rain sensing mirrors are incredibly rare and probably worth the purchase price on their own. Sorry, sarcasm filter is still not working. Grin

The omega is a lot of car for your money and they are not without their faults but that should not put you off. the most common reason for the car giving problems is mainly poor servicing, and lack of knowledge to the proper scheduel. Dont go by the guide that vx say is ok but half it then take off 1000 miles. REGULAR CLEANING OF THE BREATHER SYSTEM will prolong the life of your cam cover gaskets and save you cooking the leads and destroying the dis pack. Every 40,000 change the cam belt and tensioners useing vx parts and oil change and filter every 3-4 thou. [mine gets changed every 2 thou] but the car will love you for it. Some have electrical gremlins but most are easy to sort, and some rust spots can be found under the top window trim on the doors. V6 2.5 is the most flexible if you want performace and fuel economy but the 3.0lt is the most execiting. the 2.6 is just as good for fuel and will give you very few headaches,But remember that they need to be serviced regular. Thumbs Up!

The mpg is often not so good as Veccy due to extra weight. With regular routine maintenence, most Omegas are reliable beasts. Unfortunately most garages (inc dealers) simply do not know/want to do a proper job.

My 1998 MV6 has broken down once in the 4 yrs I've had it, due to crank sensor, which is about the only sensor on v6 that will make your car go home on a low loader!

Like most cars, as you approach 100k, suspension will need work.

Seen a couple 2.6/3.2 with failing coil units and failing throttles.

Iv'e owned various Vauxhalls, this is my 1st Mig & i love it. Had her for nearly a month now, big, comfortable, safe & good on on juice, but mines a DTi I shall be keeping her for a long time
