No Aircon
15. May 2008 at 12:06

Hello.

I have tried to use the aircon recently and got nothing. There was absolutely no change in the temp through the vents. I have also listened in the engine bay while switching aircon off and on. There is no change in engine noise and no other noises as if something was starting and stopping.

The fuse also seems to be OK.

Is this a symptom of needing a re-gas or is there a more sinister failure in progress.

Any help greatly appretiated.

As has been posted on numerous threads before, sounds like .a) no refrigerant or a lack of it causing the compressor not to engage..b) a knackered compressor..c) a major leak in the system causing all the refriegerant to escape.
Solution would be to get a fully system pressure check for leaks..then a charge of gas into the system to see if the compressor is engaging.
Kwikfit offer a "free" air con ckeck so worth a trip to your local branch assuming they offer that facility and then take it from there.
Air con can be quite an expensive item to repair and should be left to a qualified technician with the appropriate equipment.Best of luck with it and post your findings once the system has been checked.

Dont rely on KwikFit - they gassed mine up when there was a leak from the condensor!  Get somone who understands aircon to pinpoint the problem.

I used to live in Medway, I always used an air con specialist in West Malling, cant for the life of me remember the name of the garage, but its on the left as you drive from west malling to wateringbury, after the old airfield site.

No!  Never go to Kwik Fit....it is typical they told you about a leak "somewhere" but apparently adding nothing else!  That is because they do not have the true expertise for this (or in my experience!) anything else! Angry Angry

Find a local air-con engineer (plenty in the yellow pages) or go to a Vx main dealer to check it out / get a quote.

That's a good move Andyb! Thumbs Up!  The 70 miles, if this is what it takes and cannot find someone to come to you, should be worth it at that price which around my parts is around the average. Thumbs Up!

I have just emailed coolaircon too.

They will come to my house, or work and give me an aircon service including regas for £61 inc vat.

If they find a fault during the service, the charge is £41 inc vat and they will quote for the repair too.

Sounds like a good deal.

Thanks
Mike

update
after my trip to see Richard at coolcaraircon in Peterbrough yesterday I spent over an hour having the system vac and inspected and now all is well no leaks
there was gas in the system but not enough to make the commpressor engage all the time. The gas took ages to go in but he didnt give up made sure that the full 950gm went in and it made the temp drop to 4.5 degrees at idle lovely
it was well worth the trip as he did know what he was doing
worth the extra in fuel
i would reccommend them to anyone
Thumbs Up! Thumbs Up! Thumbs Up! Thumbs Up! Thumbs Up!
