Strange Water leak from I dont know where!
18. Aug 2008 at 11:22

Hello! I am new to the Forum, but urgently and desperately need help!
I have A GREAT 99 v 2.5 CDX. Just picked it up a month ago! Great car, but for one problem!
There is a water leak from somewhere down the back of the engine. Its the coolant that disappears in around a minute flat! Been into the garage, and I am told that there is a 'little hole right at the bottom of the V', and he is not too sure what it is! But it looks like a part that can be replaced!!! I have no idea...

Does anyone know what this might be, and whether it can be fixed???

Thanks, Jase. Huh

First look at your Heater Bypass Valve (HBV), you will find a picture of it in the maintence section.
It is located behind the Plenum (big silver thing with ECO TEC on it)

These are a first port of call with a V6 water leak, price for a new one is around £30 from Vauxhall

Check it and let us know Thumbs Up!

As Loo-Knee says check the heater by pass valve first, then I would check the oil cooler cover plate and thermostat which are both located in the V.

Thats a fast leak, so I'm guessing a hole in the oil cooler plate, or a problem with the transfer pipe to block seal. Or split pipe around coolant bridge.

Strip the plenum and intake off for a better look - see a thread in Maintenece Guides about cam cover gaskets, should be enough info to take all the intake off...

Thanks for all of your help, guys. I am guessing that it could be the cover plate with the garage saying that there is a hole...so I will have this checked and see how much it will cost to replace.

Thanks again, Jase.

I have another question! Been in touch with a few parts ppl, and finding it hard to get a plate! The nearest I have is an engine oil cooler, at £120! Is this the thing I need? Any ideas where to get one cheaper?

Thanks guys!

i know its a pain but i would want to know what part has a hole in it first before i spend 100plus on something i may not need. Are we really saying the oil cooler cover plate has a hole in it? More likely a leak in the sealent? If it is that? A small hole at the back of the v... Could be a number of things.
Hbv, coolent bridge, transfer pipe? I have hurd mechs talk of warped cooler covers,(i didnt beleive them) but a hole? How would it get a hole?

I have seen a hole in the cooler plate before.

Item posted this morning so should be with you tomorrow (it should fit through most letter boxes!).

You will need the correct sealent and a number of seals to do the job, I guess the car is not useable at the monet so I would pop the plenum and inlet off to check for the leak just in case its the curly coolant pipe at the back failed.

My money is on the cooler cover plate....mine holes through.

The plate costs about £20.

Just have your credit card ready for O-rings, banjo bolts and sealant.

Hylomar red or rtv on the plate. Ensure the mating surfaces are spotless and dry!!!!
