New SORN Law / Untaxed Vehicle starts TOMORROW.
30. Sep 2008 at 18:00

As from 1st Oct 2008, under a new legislation (Finance Act 2008) means that New Powers are in force which makes it an offence to use or keep an UN Taxed Vehicle on "Off Road" Area's and Land.

The change gives authorised persons the power of entry to carry out enforcement action, i.e., wheel clamping or removal.

There are only three exceptions to this new rule:

1. Where the vehicle is on private land which is associated with its dwelling and is SORN against that address.

2. Kept on the business premises of a motor trader.

3. Kept on the business premises of a vehicle tester.

So what does all this mean, well apart from the Government earning yet more money from us motorist, it means no more parking your untaxed vehicle at you local Pub, your friends private resident parking bay, the back of your Dads shop etc, even though its all private, off road and with or without thier permission.

You have been warned.  Angry Angry Angry Angry

What does this mean for my Scimitar? It's been in the garage since I bought it about 4 years ago, never received a Sorn reminder or anything. On the dvla website it comes up unlicensed, do I now have to apply for a Sorn at the post office?

I think SORN only applies to vehicles since 1998, so you are hopefully OK. That is according to the leaflet on the DVLA website tonight, so they may change it tomorrow. Cry Cry  Who knows what that bunch of clowns will do next.

I'm not sure but it seems another revenue seeker to me. I thought keeping an older car on the road was good for the carbon footprint so should be encouraged not hindered........................................................................

Just double checked up, its if the vehicle hasn't been taxed since 1998 then no need to sorn. There are some horror stories about it, look at http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/general-consumer-issues/23843-road-ta... An interesting post by someone called Marky-Mark, any one we know ?.

Cheers Ken

TONY H, its kept quiet for a reason, the less people know the more they catch, the more revenue raised & less in your pocket, thats this government all over, just look at them as modern day highway robbers. Wink

That's because nobody bl00dy understands it. The Finance Act 2008 amends the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 in Schedule 45. With the following:

Too true. Mind you it talks about the vehicle being at a private residence, but doesn't seem to say it must be your residence. And the current SORN decleration asks for your address, but doesn't ask where the vehicle is being kept. Or maybe I have missed that bit in amongst the rest of the Gobbledigook. Lips Sealed Lips Sealed Lips Sealed Lips Sealed Lips Sealed
