Odd computer problem ..
16. Oct 2008 at 22:28

I have an image file in mdf/mds format that on this system, opens in Daemon tools perfectly, works without any hiccups.

When I transfer it to the laptop, it mounts ok and is visible as a virtual drive, when I  try and open it there, the initial file opens ok .. then I get a message "can't find DVD ROM"

Both computers are XP SP3, both are running the latest Daemon tools, I've copied the files across in 3 different ways .. so its not a corrupt file problem.

I've also tried a programme called MagicDisc ... same result .. works on this system .. fails on laptop .. Sad

Anyone any ideas ???

Obvious one but is the DVD drive working ok on the laptop?  Check that its reading DVD's ok and also check the device manager.

Just a thought, copy the file(S) to your laptops hard drive, then open from your programs file menu rather than the Disk.

Try extracting the mdf/mds file on the original system to a regular ISO. ISO is universal and won't rely on a mounted virtual (or real) drive.

If not, UltraISO might help (for the laptop)
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Backup_and_Copy_Utilities/UltraISO....

Also, Alcohol 120% seems to be the native software for mdf/mds files.

Thanks for the ideas .. the nature of the programme is such that it has to be run from a vitrtual disk , can't be "split" using an ISO programme.

What is doing my head in is that it works on one system but not the other .. Sad

Downloading alchohol120 to try that now ..  Thumbs Up! Thumbs Up!

Edit : same on alchohol .. Sad ...

edit 2 :  Just noticed a very small thing ... when mounted on this system .. if you go to "my computor" .. the virtual drive is still "DVD Drive (I:)" and it works, ... on the laptop as soon as you mount the image the drive changes to "ACFGDE46 (I:)" and it won't work ... I wonder why the difference ???

Presume then that Daemon Tools etc are able to mount a virtual drive on the laptop with the same drive letter as it was compiled/compressed with?

That was what I think I was getting at with the ISO suggestion..?

I have had some grief with daemon tools,
but only with a specific version of a program that used to install easily.

What prog are you trying?  And is this the free version of daemon tools or the professional version.

PM if you would rather Wink
