checklist for a new purchase?

My Mundaneo has finally given up the ghost and I'm looking to buy a new miggy pronto. I've got in mind a couple of autotrader examples that i'm interested in - both 02 elite saloons, one a 3.2v6 and the other a 2.6v6 (both auto transmissions) - the 2.6 has got 80,000 miles on it, and the 3.2 is unknown (not advertised on the dealers site).

I haven't bought a car in years, and as I'm seeing one of them this afternoon (hopefully!) - I could use a checklist of things I should be looking for on 6 year old autobox v6 elites.

Apart from the obvious bits like making sure ALL the electrical bits work, and there's no mayo around the oil filler cap, and it's not gouting clouds of blue smoke out of the exhaust, can you guys point me in the right direction for an FAQ on here or give me some tips? I'm assuming I should look for evidence of a cambelt change on the 80,000 miler, as it's due...

Thats quite common the omega's, due to the lenght of the filler neck - aslong as the dip stick & header tank are clear a little mayo on the oil cap is not a worry

Just bear in mind that the road tax hikes considerably if you're looking at one that was registered post March 2001.

It amounts to an extra £4 a week over a year which I find bearable, but it might help you to talk them down on price a bit. Thumbs Up!

I love my 3.2 to bits, and JamesV6CDX a member on here does a grand job of visiting you and replacing all the cam-belt bits etc. for a very reasonable price.

Oct 2008 at 16:20 Don't forget to do an HPI test on your chosen motor as there are alot of sharks out there - I think the RAC are cheapest around £10 - well worth it if it prevents you buying a clocked, insurance-writeoff Lemon.

Oct 2008 at 17:26 Watch for clonking on front suspension (cheapish repair) leaking cam covers (gaskets go hard so do not automatically blame breathers) Gear change quality - should be very good, if not usually an oil change will sort.

I am now an Omega owner!

I needed the car quick as the mundaneo is a non runner, I have meetings in manchester on friday, so I'm picking the miggy up on wednesday.

02 plate 2.6 v6 elite, leather, bose, rear blind, and some extra lights on bendy stalks above the passenger seat and both rear seats - apparently it was an ex ministers car. According to the service record and the V5 it was owned by the government despatch car service for most of its life, before the last owner who only had it for the last 5 months (he used it as a runaround whilst he tried to sell his absolutely stunning Jag XK).

I've had a good look in the engine bay and around the car - bodywork is mint, engine bay is clean (but not obviously cleaned) with no visible leaks, autobox is smooth and doesn't clunk. Suspension is smooth and it runs very well. The leather is immaculate too.

Only thing is the service is due and it'll need the cambelt and tensioners changing too - it's at 81700 miles at the moment and is due the work - I'll have to find out when the next cambelt party is on!

All in - £1950. It's a little on the high side but I thought it was worth it for the relatively low mileage and the government ownership.
