Yes 15/40 is thicker than 10/40. Did you check the crankcase breather tube was clear?

Paul Thumbs Up!

Good thing to check that, its because of that little b*llocks that one of my conrods ended up over there somewhere Angry

10/40 vaux semi syn  Thumbs Up!

daft question but how does the grade work with the thickness ?? Embarrassed

I think its something like 10 is the thickness it is and the 40 is temp it is ok to as -40 i think. Someone else will be along soon to give accurate  info

Paul Thumbs Up!

P.s I need to typr quicker Embarrassed

I always thought the numbers related to the viscocity of the oil at operating and room temp. So 10/40 would be thinner than 15/40 at operating temp but the same when cold.  I could be mistaken though

Other way round I think, same viscosity at op. temp, 10 is runnier when cold (than 15).

The 10 indicates that it flows like a '10-weight' oil at cold temps, the 40 indicates that at operating temperature it behaves like a much thicker/heavier oil (although it isn't actually thicker than when cold, just not as thin as it would be if it behaved only like a 10-weight oil).  It's the additives that allow it to have this 'multigrade' dual-personality.  Confusing, huh?  Grin
