New bike test comes a cropper
26. May 2009 at 12:43

Seems like, in wet weather, the new bike test requiring riders to swerve at 31.2mph is causing a few headaches...and other aches.

Devised by some paper-pusher who's never ridden, presumably. Roll Eyes

But some instructors say that if riders brake and swerve at the same time they are likely to come off, particularly in the wet

Not that anyone would do that on the old test  Roll Eyes

Oddly, even though i learnt and passed in the winter it was always dry, just cold!

Have to agree though, car drivers get tests cancelled in snow, and wet weather is like snow to a car.

Do you break V6's as often as TheBoy? Then you need tunnie's towing services, recovery costs are just the humiliation of being towed by 2/3's of an engine

Any panic moment on the brakes (particulary front) will result in intamicy with the tarmac  Embarrassed

A few bikes have had abs for a while. Some riders love it, some hate it.  Bit like when ABS first came to cars, some male egos couldn't accept that the computer might do it better....

I suspect it could become more comon on bikes

The "computer" has already had it's ar$e kicked in the braking stakes when doing battle against pro drivers, although I do agree that ABS is something that should come as standard regardless if we are truly serious about "road safety"

I agree in the hands of a pro, the human brain often (but not always) beats the abs ecu.

But, and this is where ego comes in, whilst we may think we are all pro drivers, we ain't...

Spot on  Thumbs Up!

Only a very small handful are in the same class as McGrath/Windham/Wey/etc.
The rest who think they are in the same class need the electronics, if for no other reason than to reduce the collateral damage when the inevitable happens.

I read (in MCN iirc) that the D.O.T. were told that this would happen months before thet introduced it but they took feck all notice and carried on regardless.

When will the British Government have the Ball's to tell the EU to get lost interfering with all of our laws.

If they made sense it wouldn't be so bad, but some of the things that are coming out of it are utter waste of time, look at the time with such things as Banana's too stright or potato's too small ??  Huh .

Where's it end ??.

And as for the KPH measurement, it'll be here at some point. Dare say the British government are looking at a back door way of sneaking it in, probably have a trial run with some county/area near the Euro tunnel ?.
Any of you think they won't change the signs to KPH as it's too expensive, look at the money they were going to plough into the I.D. card system for everyone, there wound'nt be that many signs to change in comparison ?.   Shocked .

If they want to make biker's safer on the roads, think they're should be more bike awareness in the driving test for car drivers, both paper and practical. Perhaps even insisting that drivers take a kind of 'moped' CBT.
Might may people aware of how the rider worries about being knocked off by car drivers, and why is it when there's an accident involving a bike, they always say there's been a bike accident - that inplies that it's the riders fault, when facts always show the majority of the time its the car drivers fault.

There was an accident here whereby there were roadworks, a bike was correctly riding through them, a car driver couldn't be bothered to wait in the cue, does an unexpected U-turn, result = Rider gets thrown off his bike and losses a leg !.

I know how it feels, as I've riden a bike and now drive a car (got a motorbike trike also), so I can simpathise with riders.

Anyhow, sorry all for the bit of rant - Aimed at the government and the EU.

Nuff said !.
