....Whilst in comet's yesterday, they want to sell insurance on the products, told them not interested etc, etc,. Anyway he said you want one of these surge protector thingys, showed me them £99.99 I ain't paying that, he said I'll give you another one at 50 quid for £8.90 and knock another £40 quid off the TV, so I agreed. Anyway the friggin thing is only for pc's modems all colour coded sockets etc, this thing seemingly removes or filters dirty electricity Lips Sealed

Like an extension lead with eight sockets and tv/modem connector slots.
anyone seen these, used them Roll Eyes

Got a Belkin one for the PC and associated crap as I have had a spike take a PC out before (and take it out properly as well), however the Belkin one comes with a £30,000 warranty against failure.

As far as the TV and AV equipment goes, f**k it....if it goes bang then it goes bang.

Not that you'll want to hear this either, but the Belkin one wasn't anywhere near £50, let alone £100.

If I was you, I'd stop shopping at the likes of Comet Grin

I've used similar, belkin, at about £20 for all the computer gear, and the tv gear.

I want the computer gear protected, but the tv gear was to fix an interference issue.

With our 1st dvd player (when they cost £££) it would cut out, jump etc when heavy loads switched on or off ie shower, heating, immersion.
would also sometimes cause the computer to reboot.

These devices have fixed that issue, so the certainly do some smoothing of irregularities.

several wiring faults have since been identified and fixed by the way Wink

already have a belkin one attached to pc etc, anyway comet made me pay full price for the monster thingy, and knocked 40 quid off the TV, so either way still a bargain at under 9 quid. They're obviuosly not selling a lot of them, and there manager also asked why I was'nt interested in the insurance, my reply was it's a rip off Tongue

, and anyway explained to him that your company will send me a letter anyway in a year time advising warranty about to run out Tongue

Didn't you get the hard sell for the store card at 29.9%APR with payment protection on top, no, the manager wants sacking Grin

When I was a manager 10% of all sales had to have an extended warranty and my store had a turnover of 6 million a year Roll Eyes

Aside from an EU directive having been in place for the last 10 years that says the retailer has to give you 2 years minimum warranty, there are also several trading standards acts that give you up to 6 years if you apply them correctly.

The only time I will ever consider taking out the extra insurance is if it offers something extra that the law doesn't, eg, loan set while mine is being repaired.

wrt to SoG '79 act, thats the problem - its too open to interpretation, and all too often (due to past cases) tends to go in favour of the Retailer. Sad, but true. And with UK law, the manufacturer (who should be the one going to court) has nothing to do with the court process, save state their engineers/manufacturers/designers have looked at the item and say its NOT a manufacturing defect (which is all the 6yr thing covers). Additionally, at any point, even if it is a manufacturing defect, you are only entitled to a partial refund.

AFAIK, the EU law about 2yr warranties is not get UK law (though should be soon I understand), and, again AFAIK, no test cases have successfully enforced it here to make it law.

Your best hope is that the Retailer bottles it when the SCC papers are passed to it, and settles out of court.

When i worked at comet doing the installs we were always told never ever slag off monster cables...they even went as far as to make it a disciplinary measure if you did or even hinted at it!!! I had bullsh*tting to the customers about em and had to tell stories of how monster developed these leads and power surges in conjunction with Nasa for the space program and that they had 250 patents on these items due to the nature of they where built and designed......Thats how big the contract is with monster...I mean they even flew the big wigs out to las vegas every year for the technology show that was held there and put pics in the bi-monthly newsletter......

(No alternate routes through modems/LAN) Of course they came with the old £30k protection thing, do you think I could find the POP and paperwork to claim? No! I bought them ages ago!

Hmm that's interesting, I have had 2 "repaired" HP laptops go down within about 4 months of them fixing them, and they said its outside the 2 year period so they would do nothing. I wonder if this SOGA will help ?.
