Very common problem on laptops. Get some compressed air and give it a blast down the air vents (then choke in the cloud of dust!)

its a fairly new laptop, its had diagnostic done at currys where it was bought and it showed nothing wrong. does it when just switched on for 10 mins. screen goes black then jjust turns off

When you first switch on, you should see a message on screen that says "Press DEL to enter setup" (the word DEL may be replaced by F2, F10, etc).

Press the relevant key when prompted to enter the BIOS (setup) and let it sit there.
If it switches off just doing that, it's odds on a hardware problem.

If by fairly new, you mean less than 12months, get currys to replace it.

Yes, check your power settings. If all OK, also try to disconnect everything including USB devices, etc. (but power cord) and see if it does the same. Some cr@p USB drivers by cr@p programmers stop the PC coming back gracefully from standby, so you might think it's been turned off.

I took my old uni laptop to bits every year, clean out the heat sync and vents. After the rebuild it ran silent, and noticeably cooler!

Mine did the same before i went away.What's is your's make ?.
Pc world found nothing wrong but i have noticed i don't have to use a pass word now to start the lap top plus and now it's a lot quicker.When i called their " The tech boys" that's what they call them i was told in the end there was a problem with the way the password program worked.

Mine did the same before i went away.What's is your's make ?.

Yet another quality diagnosis from PC World, sounds like they have put a password on the BIOS, did you ask for this?

I would put a fresh copy of Windows on, the high street shops install way too much crap.

40 mins from a restore disc????

Dude, I set Win 7 up on my machine (start to finish) using a retail disc in 13 mins....add another 10 mins (tops) for the driver installs....that's it.

If a "restore" takes 40 mins, you really need to consider proper restore software IMO.
