a little help wth exact word needed
04. Dec 2009 at 10:25

I need a little help.
My father is building a wooden ship model and needs a few bits to buy.
It is an old sailing ship.
Can anybody tell  me what is the exact english name for the following part I' m going to describe a little.
It is the metal or wooden part through the ropes from sails go and keeps them tightened. Also I think the same part is where the ropes go around it and it also keeps them tihgtened.

No Im don't think it is any of those.
It used to look like a wheel rim and ropes passed through it and around it on old sailing ships

Its manual, you can see the splines in the top where the winch handle goes. The handles are usually taken out when they are not being used otherwise people trip over them.

Big winches might be called capstans.

Pulleys, blocks, pulley blocks, sheeves are all words that might be applied to the er pulleys.

Bottle screws are used to tension the rigging.
