Starting problem
09. Dec 2009 at 06:04

I came to start the miggy this morning and it turned over but would not fire up,so i turned the ignition off and tried again but no luck so i got out and locked her and opened her and tried again and she fired up and ran normally but a couple of hours she did the same all over again only this time i could not unlock her with the key fob and had open the door manually and reset the fob in the ignition and then she fired up again....This has worried me as i do not want a problem with the car and i`m stumped as to whats causing this?? alarm or under the bonnet??? Any help guys?

Read the fault codes.

Was the ECU light flashing?

No the ecu  did not flash....I went to start her to go home and she just turned over and would not fire up and then all of a sudden fired up and ran fine till i got off the motorway and then started to stutter as if she was missing on some cylinders and cut out when i was pulling over at home??? but fired straight up when i started her agian and the tickover hunted for a second but then settled at 500 rpm??? i`ll try to do the paperclip test in a bit....

Crank sensor... Was my first guess.

At least it's an easy (and relatively cheap) fix Thumbs Up! Thumbs Up!

According to autodata 19 Engine speed (rpm) sensor- incorrect signal  Probable cause wiring,RPM sensor, reluctor ring or ECM.

hope that helps

19 =known problem .. Guide in the "guides section" explains exactly how to sort this .. Smiley

Not difficult .... but a little "fiddly" ... and getting the right one from your all-knowing Vx dealer can be a pain .... but has to be done .. genuine only IMHO

Surely it will show code 19 as the engine wasnt running, not because of a fault?

19 is a "stored" fault .. not a "live" one .... 31 is the engine not running live code IIRC .. Smiley

19 = incorrect rpm signal   31 = no RPM signal  Smiley
