The actual problem is the PCB bends ever so slightly when the box goes back together..and as the GPU is an SMD (Surface Mount Device)...the rest is obvious for those with even a passing interest in the basics of physics.

As you say, online "bodges" hold the problem at bay for a while (quite a while actually)...but the only real fix is to build the blank properly to start with.
