Changing from fitted stereo to non vauxhall stereo

Hi all

The stereo on my 99 Elite has died, and I wanted to change it to a spare one I happened to have (Sony) but when removing the leads, it appears I have extra on top of the standard ones. When I plug the stereo in, the power works but there's no sound.

Halfords said I need to get a special lead to allow me to use the stereo as I have sat nav and TA (which aren't used), and they quoted me £40 for it. Is there a simple solution, or a cheeper one?

Also, is there a way of plugging in the steering wheel controls into a new stereo?

Feb 2010 at 16:33 The top lead is not used on Aftermarket models, as runs the display and other features. Does your car have BOSE fitted? If so, it is not compatable with aftermarket audio, and would be the cause of your non audio problem.

Does your car have BOSE fitted?

If so, it is not compatable with aftermarket audio, and would be the cause of your non audio problem.

Elite will have Bose

David - You will need to souce another Bose compatible Vx radio, or ripe out all the bose speakers, parcel shelf, and amp, and fit standard speakers.

Do you break V6's as often as TheBoy? Then you need tunnie's towing services, recovery costs are just the humiliation of being towed by 2/3's of an engine

Feb 2010 at 16:39 BTW, if you're going to the effort of ripping out all the Bose (which you will have to if you fit another radio, ignore the advice halfrauds give you), do yourself a favour and fit something better than that crap Sony heap of junk

So its not just a case of it burning out the head unit / speakers, the Sony will be not be able to drive the 2 Ohm speakers at-all?

No knowing how it will go, but common scenerios we have experienced when connecting up to 2 ohm speakers are as follows:

Head unit no audio - then goes bang spectacularly

Head unit no audio - then fizzes and goes bang spectacularly

Head unit no audio - then fills the car full of smoke, then fizzes and goes bang spectacularly

Head unit no audio - stays in protection mode, and if you remove it quickly before any damage is done, it can be salvageable
