Driving a Timebomb...
29. Mar 2010 at 14:09

I bought my 406 HDi Estate with 168,027 miles on the clock.

It had:

* No record of any cambelt changes. I've no idea when it was last done.

* No record of an oil change. The last owner did 10k in it, and told me he hadn't as much as lifted the bonnet.

I've now done a further 3,000 miles in her, it's like driving a time bomb   Roll Eyes

I also have:

* excessive play in front NS wishbone. You can rock the wheel right back with the car on the ground!

* Front brakes made a horrid metallic noise coming back from Di's last night. Sadly, the meat on the pads has gone to better places. It needs handbrake shoes, and at the same time, may as well do rear disks and pads, and then a brake fluid flush.

There is some play in a rear wheel, which I need to address.

Also a blowing rear exhaust, and perished handbrake cables.

I am afraid, Easter weekend, I am going to have to sort out my own car - else before long, I won't be able to travel anywhere at all  Roll Eyes

On the plus side, I put some Texaco diesel in last night - their premuim stuff - and the hesitation / injector clatter has very significantly reduced... Odd !

Stick to the Texaco stuff then and add a measure of 2 stroke oil at the same time Wink

Nah, I won't sell her... I'll run it into the ground Grin

I think the injector pump is fine - no fuel pressure codes or anything else - just a lazy injector  Thumbs Up!

Similar to my Astra shed. Odometer stuck at 147000 miles due to goosed pick-up on gearbox, no service history at all, but the car was £400 none runner off eBay. Now nudging 175000 miles  Huh

Do you break V6's as often as TheBoy? Then you need tunnie's towing services, recovery costs are just the humiliation of being towed by 2/3's of an engine

Sounds like you need to put some of that famous expertise into your own car rather than doing everybody else's mate  Tongue

talking of timebombs - I bought an Omega Elite last friday. The previous owner had had the cam belt changed at 40,000 miles and again at 80,000 miles and never again. Current mileage 247,000 !
