Irrelevant advice about bums? Has no-one else had to have a job re-done because the original advice that was given and acted on turned out to be BS bigtime? Those who provide information that is less than helpful know who they are, fortunately there are only a few of them who pop up all too often, but better still I now know who I can trust and who to disregard when it comes to advice.
Daz is one of the very best and we had a laugh at some of the advice previously given by those who think they know, but actually know jack.
Nice to know though that Daz is so respected (go on, have a dig at that one too) cos only m8s would take the pee like that. Pink rags and RA............................... You had me thinking he was well sunburnt and gay Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Wink Pink rags I can stand but RA AAAAAAAARGH! Cry
Ah well, mobile again so its back to the daily grind but at least I can get out for a drink now:P
Cherrs Daz for the comments, only wish there was as much life in me  Grin Started first crack at 3 this morning too (told you I was an early bird) Had to rise early to make sure I got the mess cleaned up of ther front before Cris   AngryKiss saw the wall! All done now though so my ass is safe...........unless I missed a bit Grin

Pleased to hear of your experience with Daz, sounds like you really enjoyed his company. Shocked Wink
but i'm not sure "those who give bad advice" do know who they are or they would not give it. Unless somebody tells them, politely, they wont learn. And if we dont tell them we cant really complain if they continue...?

So, what have i done? Cheesy

I tend to agree with Chris.

If you don't want to name names, at least say what misleading piece(s) of advice you've been given.

Must also agree with Chris, and even as a "non-tech" I can see "silly" answers on several occasions.....  Sad

That is the main reason for my attempts to try, as often as possible, to answer a problem with a link to the maintenance guides.

These are known to be accurate and well written, and should instill confidence in those who have only a little knowledege.... one of the problems with the "fast answer" is the recipient has no idea of the accuracy of the info given.

In time we all build up a "memory" of who we trust and who we don't .... but those who come here for the first time witha problem .. and I bet that's 90% of new members ... don't have that info... and may well believe the first thing they read ... Sad

Good "maintenance guides" and "how to's" ... and lots of pointers to them ....that will stop the "wrong" answers IMHO .

I think the key point here is "good intention"..

every member less or more try to help the other members here.. thats the reason for OOF..

and you cant blame someone if his info dont help at the end of the day..

could happen to any of us..  I personally work on computers for a long time and even my answers may be useless at one point.. because helping someone at a physically remote place is not that easy .. without actually witnessing the problem..

finally its your decision which answer will solve the problem..

glad Bionics problem is solved here.. and I trhink further analysis of the answers given not necessary  Thumbs Up!

its a forum, full of opinions, if all opinions where the same we would not need a forum in the first place as everyone would know the answer to a problem.

How to sort the wheat from the chaf?

Well first off, dont ignore the chaf, if a post is deemed to be missleading we must say so imo.

The hard bit is doing so without upsetting the good intentions of the person who gets it wrong.

We all cock up from time to time, we get tired, miss read, speed read, get distracted by work as the boss looks over your shoulder while your replying, etc etc.

We should bare that in mind when taking advice as well.

I get concerned about my own advice when i see others ignored when talking, well, rubbish basickly. If nobody picks up on it, they wont pick up on my errors either perhaps. I hope i would be politely corrected.

For the record, i've had bad advice as well, carlton rear donut bushes being the most obvious one. But it was given with good intention and would have been worthwhile if the blasted things would stay in.

I think we cannot solve this problem, but we can reduce it at least a little.
Just ask all people to think twice before suggesting anything, and if not 100% sure of their answer to write it down, so those in need of help can have a choice to wait for a better advice or confirmation of that one what they got.

I have been 'guilty' of passing on my own experiences without making sure I had thoroughly read it before pressing the Post Message button Embarrassed  Happily, no damage would have been caused in that instance, and Thankfully Entwood was there immediately to put me right  Thumbs Up!. I can see the OP's point to a degree, but also agree that any seriously 'duff' information that has/may have caused damage or serious inconvenience, needs to be addressed in the open so that lessons can be learned.
While i'm on my soapbox, I may as well bring up 'again' the subject of spelling mistakes, bad grammar, text speak etc. I can't be the only one who has tried to read a Post and been unable to grasp the real meaning of it because I simply can't read it! This in itself can cause misunderstanding if a Post is misread.
Off the soap box, on with the Motley  Grin Thumbs Up!

This is a car forum.....and as such it can only provide possible causes and solutions + tests/actions to take in order to further identify the route cause.

It is upto and the responsability of the receiver of the information to decide and/or interpret the feedback given.

Text speak I agree with.

Grammar and spelling I dont.

Its an automotive forum, not an english lesson and as long as the technical information is offered correctly and the information is clear then these 2 items are NOT important (and for me, this is true of the real world for most everyday situations to).  Thumbs Up! Thumbs Up!
