WANTED: Towbar wiring loom for minifacelift estate
24. May 2010 at 14:31

Have obtained towbar (thanks MutantCav) but told there is a "special" wiring loom that simply plugs in to a connector in the spare wheel well of my estate to make it all easy for the computer to recognise a blown bulb in the trailer and also bring on the light in the dash warning too.
Does anybody have this bit of wiring??

TIA,  Mike.

I recently came up with this problem Mike.

Unfortunately, I failed to source one ANYWHERE, and got a local tow-bar specialist to wire it up via the loom at the N/S/R light cluster.
It cost me 15 quid (which included the 'beeper') and was done within 20 minutes.

Not the 'ideal' maybe, but it all works beautifully! Thumbs Up!

The loom, if you could get it, will only extend the brake light check to the trailer & that's via an extra 'relay' that lives above the driver's feet in prefacelift cars & behind the glove box on later cars. The buzzer is only fitted for ease of the fitter, although to use the lamp that GM designed into the dash, he only needed to remove the dash and fit a bulb & swap the 3 pin flasher relay for a 4 pin relay - the wiring is already there.
As for using the tail light to pick up the wiring, if you remove the trim from the back edge of the boot, you'll find the plug/socket there, which includes a 12 volt supply that would be used for your caravan's fridge/charging circuits.  Thumbs Up!

I was met by blank looks when I asked for one at my local dealers, so I made my own using various blue/black loop plugs 'found' at my local scrap yard  Roll Eyes & a GM 8 wire 12N socket  Thumbs Up!

Just got back from Skurrays Vauxhall. asked them for the VX plug and play loom, got blank looks and told "never heard of it mate, no listing here"

yeah, right. T*SSERS.

Back to plan two then, and wire it to the back lights myself via a buzzer...............

Why a buzzer? Swap the 3 pin flasher relay for a 4 pin, put a lamp in the dash and you're away.
I once had a buzzer in a car, it lasted just one journey across town before it was ripped out & 'float tested'. I found it to be bl00dy anoying.  Roll Eyes Wink

Yeah, but I'll have to take the darn instrument cluster out to do that..........and the buzzer in an estate will be just about audible (unless I have my stereo on.................)

Yes Mike, it's just about audible, and I can live with it.
As I previously stated, though it's not the ideal solution, it works fine. Thumbs Up!
