On automatic cars, there is an unconnected pipe at the rear of the engine, often wrapped around the engine breathers.

This is the gearbox breather, and needs to be higher than the gearbox, and idealy the open end pointing downwards (to reduce the chances of debris falling in). It must not be blocked off!
