Interesting pictures .... but doesn't look as though the plastic impeller just got loose on the metal shaft .... more like a  forieign body jammed the impeller causing it to crack apart.

I was undecided on this one as I thought the same as you initially, but on closer inspection it seems that the centre has worn through in places before finally coming loose. I am now facing the prospect of flushing the block under proessure to try and find these stray parts - joy  Sad

I had mine done about two years ago, as a precaution when the stat was done.
It was in perfect condition, no wear to the shaft and no cracks on the plastic impellor. Done approaching 117k.
I had it replaced anyway with with the very same type, proper BMW part.

Wonder if it's a certain type of anti-freeze that affects  them, makes them brittle.

replaced mine with metal impellor again as a precaution, but when i removed it it was perfect condition same as Micks above,
however mine has always run truck longlife antifreeze since ive had it, so dont think thats the reason? mine had 121k on the clock when i did it Thumbs Up!

All back together and working fine, just got to adjust the handbrake and stick some diesel magic in to clear emissions - and it will have 12 months test.

Ready to be sold in the new year now so watch this space!

By the way - the DIY pump is great! Grin
