Now that my old miggy is running smoothly and has a nice new mot I want to sort out the bodywork. It is not terrible but as we know it is impossible to get a good paint match when spraying any metallic. I have had spray cans made up and the colour match (star silver II) is OK but the cans are £13 each. I fancy buying a compressor, tank and spray gun and having a go myself - anyone got any advice regarding equipment etc for a budding paint sprayer?

compressor must be 100 litre or more, 50's
not adequate imo..

a good quality paint.. (so will be worth your effort)

you will need to remove many plastic parts , mirrors, door handles, bumpers (they must be painted seperately on a table) , headlights etc ..

sunroof fully inside, all windows trims etc etc..

tires and alloys must be covered as the spray dust can be hardly cleaned..

then you must start wet sanding.. if you will not wipe the old coating start with 800 then finish with 1500..
try not to let deep scratches as they will show under the paint..

total process will take approx minimum 12 to 15 days..

number of layers for paint and laquer you can apply depends on the environment  temperature .. if its cold you cant spray many layers as it will flow..

painting area must be clean and free of dust as much as possible..no parfumes,silicones and polishes around as they damage the paint..

before painting the car you must try the paint gun on another surface to get used to..

ps: for standard painting 2-3 layers of paint 2 layers of laquer applied.. but from my experience 2 layers of preparational paint .. let dry for a day .. again sand the surface with 1500 then again 2-3 layers of paint and  3-4 layers of laquer (applied before the paint dries) gives good results
