omega 2.2 auto???
20. Dec 2010 at 22:35

hi all! i hope i am doing this right as never done anything like this before? . . i have a year 2000 2.2 auto which i bought about two weeks ago and broke down this week  Cry i was advised by RAC  Lips Sealed that it was most probably the crank sensor but his computor would not connect to the car? now i have been looking through this helpful site and i have joined as i am completly stuck now.  I was going to try the pedal trick, then also the paper clip trick but yet again i fell at the first hurdle as my car needs to have its codes read and i can't cheat  . . . to be honest i cant afford to get the car anywhere to get them read, and i don't want to buy a sensor if this does not cure it, as sensors are none returnable.  All the manuals i have found only go upto 1999 if i new where to look for the sensor it may have just come lose?? i would be most gratful if anyone can help in any info Huh

Symptons please Janine. Broke down as in just died, or spluttered to a halt. Does it turn over, any warning lights staying on.

Hi Janine, and welcome to the forum Thumbs Up! As RobG says a bit more information might help, though getting the codes read is the only reliable way to identify a fault. We have had 2.0L / 2.2L Migs, well only 3, over 10 years and have had Crank sensor problem and Cam sensors twice but car kept going though rough and would stall, similar with a Dis pack only failure to stop the car was the Head Gasket last week..... Hi
I assume this is a petrol 2.2?  I thought cam sensors were more of a problem on these than the crank sensor.  Best option, if one of the OOF travelling mechanics is near you, is to get one of them to put a scanner on it.  Their charges are very reasonable.  Failing that, try changing the cam & crank sensors one at a time, the cost is probably less than getting Vx to read the codes.
Also, as others have said, give us more details of how it stopped, what happens when you crank it etc.

Hi Janine,

I am only in the next county (Gloucestershire) - please PM me your location in Wiltshire, and a contact number, (I don't come on the forum much anymore), and providing we can work something out that suits us both, and that the roads are OK, I will come over and fix it free of charge.

I have all the tools / code readers / diagnostic facilities, and no doubt we can get to the bottom of it.

Am I correct in assuming this is a 2.2 16v petrol?

Kind regards,
James

It's unlikely that I will be online for the rest of this evening, due to a broadband upgrade in my new house. I've left you some contact details via PM, feel free to give me a shout if the offer of assistance would be useful.

Kind regards,
James

Hi all,

I am heading over to Swindon this evening, to see if I can at least establish why Janine's Omega will not start.

Just as a bit of background, Janine was using the car all day, and it was fine.

She put fuel in as normal, and drove to a friends house.

She then drove somewhere else, and then upon restarting, the Omega would just not start.

So far, we know

- Cranking, but won't fire. No coughing, no trying, just won't fire.

- No funny smells or strange noises before failure

- No rough running/misfiring, before failure to start

- Car cranks at normal speed, hopefully eliminating a cambelt issue.

- No flashing immobiliser lights.

- Car has not been misfueled (I felt awkward asking, but it has to be eliminated)

I'll start by reading the codes and usual checks, I will be taking the sealey reader, and the Opcom and laptop, so hopefully I will get somewhere.

If anyone wants to add any useful suggestions to this thread, it would be much appreciated. As most will gather, I'm not as in-touch with my mechanical side as I used to be!

Many thanks.

Kind regards,
James

James, check for fuel in the rail.......cranking  & no smell makes me wonder if you have fuel pressure.

Starting to sound like the RAC man could be right with the crank sensor.

Hi Kneepad,

The 4 pot will start with a missing crank sensor, so I doubt this is the sole cause?

Kind regards
James

Cheers James. I was assuming no rpm signal would mean no fuel.   Thumbs Up!
