On the 2.2, both the cranksensor and the camsensor have to die. The ECU is happy(ish) to work with just one (either), might just take a bit of extra cranking (4-5s).

2.2 cranksensors do fail (not as often as 2.2 cam sensors). If its got aircon, fiddly to change.
