decoding MOT failure notice

Hi all,
My 2.5 estate auto has just failed the mot in one aspect.
" Nearsides front Steering box has relative movement between sector shaft and the drop arm (2.2.B.1b) "
Anybody speak the above language can tell me what is wrong and what will need to be done?
I am waiting for the tester to return my call to give me a price to fix.
He also told me the Front Nearside Shock absorber is starting to leak so I guess it will be expensive Cry

Sounds to me like he means the idler arm

Never just replace one shock absorber .. must always be done in pairs .. extremely dangerous to just do one as the other will be worn.

As said, always in pairs, always! All sorts of handling nightmares can result otherwise!

Garage was quite happy to do just one, just shows how easy it is to just do the minimum and then presumably keep replacing other things generating more work at my cost for themselves.
