I had a problem like this, someone who owned the car before me put some new backplates on but instead of doing the job properly they just chopped them in half and fitted them.
I had to strip both sides and fit new bearings too, the hardest job was getting my hands on some backplates. they are like rocking horse s**t

So the lever assembly at the base of the back plate was removed, stripped, cleaned and refitted after some grease was applied to the pivot?

yep think im going to see about some new one did not come in kit with new set when put them back in there is play in them.. copper greased and removed all muck cleaned the back plate and gave it a coat of paint... where do you get new one's from as were not in the kit and it said full kit on box from GM only tuck them 8hrs to deliver...cable has about 1 1/2 inches left on bolt nut so room there nothing is sticking any were, did 30mph and used hand beake just slow'd down then stopped no skidding at all or locking up???
