With Virgin, its really dependent on what other local users are doing. You could argue similar for some ADSL connections, but to a lesser extent.

For normal web surfing and email, maybe a bit of iPlayer etc, a standard 8Mb connection is enough for most families to be honest.

Ping is usedto test the reachability of a host, it measures the round-trip time for messages sent from the originating host to a destination.

Same term used in submarines, used to measure distance

Do you break V6's as often as TheBoy? Then you need tunnie's towing services, recovery costs are just the humiliation of being towed by 2/3's of an engine

It's the time it took for a particular kind of message (actually a single packet of data) to reach the target server and be replied to.

Just like the 'ping' you hear in a sumbarine from sonar sweeps in films.. Hence the name.

And ping is generally as much use as a used johnny smeared in dogshit when it comes to any form of performance testing.

We currently get 5.42MB/s down and 0.97MB/s up, Ping 40mS, our ISP is BE.

It does seem quite fast downloading stuff, but as others have mentioned quite often pages take a while to download, in some cases don't finish downloading. SOmetimes stoping the transfer and reloading the page produces quick results, strange  Huh

What do you think of BE ?? I was looking at their "packages" combined broadband and landline ... prices seem quite competetive ...  Smiley

O2 use BeThere's infrastructure, and most people seem happy with that (DNS issues aside, and a suspect mail service). And only around £7 for ADSL2 stuff, if you have an O2 mobile phone.

Don't have O2 .. but BE broadband + anytime landline works out at £32 a month ... I'm presently paying out £51 by the time you take calls/line rental/BB from 3 different suppliers into account.

Looking for a decent "all in one" package.

they've just upped the upload speed apparently  not sure of the figures though

Just as an example, Romania has an AVERAGE upload speed 10x faster than the AVERAGE UK upload speed.

Their average download speed is less than 2.5x the average UK download speed.

I haven't chosen Romania as a comparison just because they are an exception, this is true for the majority of the world.

And here I am, on the outskirts of one of the biggest citys in the UK, paying £18 per month for something that is usually around the 350-600 K/bs. And that's the best that I can get!

Pathetic really.  Angry

Free market economy. If companies think they can make money, they will put the infrastructure in.  If nobody thinks money can be made, just be greatful that BT are prepared (not legislated Wink) to...  ...then allow other ISPs to use it virtually at cost.

What solution would you suggest?
