Driving Test Centres maybe thing of the past ?
04. Feb 2011 at 19:03

It appears that driving test centres maybe passed into privately run/owned business, rather than government controlled centres.

http://uk.yahoo.com/_ylt=A03uvwkERUxNwvUAsjo4hJp4;_ylc=X3oDMThmMWpzZTkzBF9TAzIwM...

What does anyone else think about this, as personally I don't think it will it make better drivers of anyone on the road even if they did.

We need a whole shake up of the driving standards system anyhow.
And on a personal note, I think the age for those learning to drive should be increased to 21.

Anyone else got any thoughts on the above

I don't think that this would work as the age of consent for everything else is 18......The vote...getting married(without parental consent)...obtaining credit...smoking.....drinking alcohol in a pub....etc ..etc..

Learning to drive at 17 has been law for years.  And 30 years ago when learning in a Moggy Minor, etc, wasn't too much of a deal as average family cars then weren't that quick.  But now the cars are almost 5x-10x more powerful and even a Ka can hit nearly 90-100mph.

Other alternative is perhaps as motorbikes (and Ireland I think) have restricted power laws for those under a certain age.

I'm not generalising, but I just think that these days, 17 year old's aren't a mature as perhaps years ago, everything seams a laugh to most and they don't understand the serious responsiblity when driving a car, it's all about showing off and who gives a " Exclaim"... I know what I'm doing.  And till it happens of course.

i dont think driving age should be increased to 21, there are a LOT of people who absolutely rely on having their own car for work, college, uni

i wasnt one of them and only started driving at 23

what we need are dangerously strict driving tests and much more thorough lessons, anything that filters out the idiots that cause most of the "accidents"!

I too don't think that the age limit should increase, but i do think that a limit on the pwer output of cars should be limted not only by age but by length of time a licence is held for.

Think its Sweden, Finland, or such like, that has the right idea.

I believe that youngsters have to start learning to drive a car at around 14 on a private track.  They don't get their actual licence and till 21 and you should see what they have to go through during lessons and tests.  And part of one test is they have to purposely go and skid a car a full 360 in the wet to experience an uncontrolled skid (probably producing the fore mentioned 'wet and skid' in the process Shocked  Roll Eyes) .
Would also explain why the Swiss/Finland/other snow bound countries produce such good rally drivers!  Wink .

Mind you the government also believes that its money well spent on training the young drivers in this way, as they end up being safer drivers and the death rate is lower than most other European countries.  Possibly due to the education that's part of the learning process.
And also think that if you're an idiot, it only delays the time before you’re passed and get a licence as it's pretty strict.

Of course we'll never have anything like that in this country, as it's down to the usual subject "Cost", comes before life’s  Angry .

I don't know about lowering the age limit, but I do think the driving test "pass" standard should be raised to that of HGV/PCV/Motorbike level... They are far more strict and teach you to look further than the car in front Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

The previous Mrs LD was a dreadful driver (much as she wouldn't admit it until after taking her Motorbike test Roll Eyes) until she started riding 'bikes and had to think about every other idiot on the road Wink Wink

Okay... Okay...

We've gone a bit off track here.

With regards to the thread title, who thinks that privatising the test centres which become run as business's (which will run for profit otherwise they won't be open for long) will be better than the current 'government' run system we have now.

almost nothing thats been privatised has resulted in a better end product for the consumer - and we still end up subsidising private company profits. Not everything needs to make money  Thumbs Up!

even banks tried privatisation and it didnt work out - we subsidise them even with their galactic profits over the last century or so.....proof - if proof were ever needed that socialism benefiting all is the only course of action.

I'm sure everyone agrees with me on this  Wink

Taxpayers money has been pumped into the privatised railway system to try and reverse the decades of neglect during British Railway days, plus the money not paid to the previous Big Four companies during the 1939-45 war years.  Billions of pounds was not spent when it should have been. Thats because Passenger rail services will never make money, just look at Wrexham & Shropshire, they've gone bust, because they had no tax payer money. They were making losses of millions per year, their services were popular too, used to see their trains most evenings, always quite full.

Lizzie.....If the company is private let it succeed or fail on it's own. If it can't thrive without the taxpayer picking up the bill then it should be nationalised.

I thought that the whole point of the Tory privatisations in the eighties and nineties was that the taxpayer would no longer have to prop up companies such as British Leyland.... Wink Kiss Kiss
