The famous B-bolt on the transfer pipe
09. Feb 2011 at 06:10

Having "slight" difficulties removing the b****-bolt. It is tight  Sad Angry. Is it supposed to be?

Only thing I could fit there was a 10mm ring spanner, there is not enough room for any socket. And it is tight. No room to hit the spanner. Have had a look at the excellent how-to but it just says "unbolt the b-bolt". Cant even see the bolt, had to do all just by feeling it.  Angry Sad

It is actually a little Torx headed bolt.

Get yourself a set of Torx bits and use whatever means necessary to loosen it (I think I got a 3/8 ratchet handle in there but there isn't the space to wind it all the way out with a socket + ratchet)

Once it is loose I understand that a 10mm ratchet ring spanner makes the job almost a pleasure Roll Eyes

Yes, it is torx head an I do have all the tools but it is TIGHT. Will have to retry tonite  Thumbs Up!

Is it likely that I will damage the transfer pipe? I only have the stat with housing and all the seals but I planned to reuse the transfer.

What is frustrating is that it is in the side of the block at an odd angle. (the V6 has a 54 degree included angle so the bolt is at 27 degrees from horizontal).

Pushing/pulling in the direction that feels 'right' isn't necessarily the most effective use of effort  Sad

I changed my thermostat last year so I have forgotten some of the details but I think I took the battery out and unbolted the power steering reservoir to make access little easier.

I may also have lifted the ECU out of the triangular box and layed it (and the big bundle of cable) over the engine out of the way (not sure about the last one, I may be thinking about what I had to do to remove the engine in a previous car)

Its easier if you unbolt the PAS res and move it to one side (beware, there is a hole in the lid which acts as a vent), this allows the PAS pipes (which obscures the B-Bolt) to be eased out of the way which improves access.

Yes I used a ring spanner when I did mine. You're not trying to tighten it by accident are you?

No luck. I'm pizzzed  Angry Angry The only chance now seems to be to put the intake back on and drive it. Although I already loosened the stat bolts, will I end up with a leak?

I managed to get enough room by taking off the upper end oh one of the hoses to power steering fluid reservoir. Just taking the bottle off it's bracket did not give enough space (the other hose is so short?!). Well, now I could reach the b-bolt somewhat.

I dropped my E12 socket and a spanner "somewhere" when trying to undo it, can not see them? Where have they gone? Does anyone know where they may have landed? Not visible from any direction, crawled under the car and did not see them.

Tried different spanners, they slipped. 10mm, 3/8", the Wurth Multi spanner, all. Tried a multi-socket (Wurth does not sell any torx spanners and the E12 socket went missing) and it slipped, the bolt still it TIGHT. Direction to open is counter-clockwise, looking from the end of the bolt the spanner pointing to right and pull up.

I already had my angle grinder in my hands but the I realized it won't fit in there.

Not having much luck with it. And it's -12 degrees out there. I have not been this pizzed for a while...
