PAS fluid: Dexron II or III

Can't find the threads about this issue... Which is it? Haynes says Dex3, I remember readign that it was changed by GM to Dex2. Which is it? Any harm to pour in a small qty of dex3 if the reservoir is filled with dex2?

Officially it's Dex II.

I think Dex III is incompatible with the hoses and can cause them to leak. That's the urban myth, anyway.

Yes, that I have read but why is it? D3 "superceeds" D2 and should be 100% compatible? As in oils, you can use API SL if requirement is SH etc. And nowadays there's even Dexron VI available... I can understand that you should not put D2 in a D3 designated transmission but in PAS I think even that would be fine...

And, anyway, the Omega PAS will eventually leak it all out  Grin

I don't know the reason ... Field Remedy 1570 on TIS clearly states

Quote:
TIS 2000 indicates that the power steering oil specification for Vivaro is
Dexron III. This is now incorrect.
The original fluid was Dexron III  (PN 90 510 269, Cat-No. 19 40 763) which
was used to service certain power steering and automatic transmission fluids
(ATF).
This oil is no longer available so a new version of oil Dexron III has been
specified for the affected ATF (PN 93 160 372, Cat-No. 19 40 712) however
this oil is not compatible with power steering systems and should not be
used for this function because this may result in leakages.
To service the power steering system the oil now specified has reverted back
to Dexron II (PN 90 350 342, Cat-No. 19 40 700).
This should prevent any confusion when trying to select the correct oil for
the correct application.
NOTE: This information is valid for all models except Sintra (partnumber
90 513 486, Cat: 19 40 707) and Astra-G/Zafira/Vectra-C/Signum (partnumber
93 160 458, Cat: 19 40 715).

Although the script says "vivaro" the "models" list clearly says

Quote:
Vivaro 2001...,Movano 1999...,Omega-B 1994...,Frontera-B 1999...

Ok, that convinced me. Will source some D2 and refill with it. Or, then again, the amount D3 I poured in is quite small...

Maybe, but somewhere along the line Vx got into a pickle over what Dexron to recommend.  I remember when I not long ago went to my Vx dealer and their system was stating a new Dexron VI was to be used on Omega's.  Within a few weeks that advise had been replaced with talk of Dexron III.  Never did change the ATF though, as that Omega was written off shortly afterwards!! Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Cry Cry

So what I am saying is watch and question any advise you are given, only deciding which to use once you are entirely satisfied you have the right Dexron in mind! Tongue Tongue Tongue Cheesy Cheesy Wink

I am even more confused now after looking on autodata as they say dexronIIE for the autobox and dexron III for the power steering which is at odds with entwoods post re the tis 200 Sad

It is backwards compatible... For everything except vx pas pipes it seems. Going by tis and oof service guides.

So IMO, given the proven route is well documented all we need to know is ...

Pas dex 2

ATF dex 3

I used D111 for my Pas after it started leaking, after 15k mls and 7-8 litres it stopped leaking & have used it for the velvetdrives in my boats. It's supposed to be backwards compatible. Apparantly  there was some D111 that the hoses didn't like, in the past.

Remember it was a very specific DIII that caused problems. So chancs are, most DIII will be fine.

DIII for Omega gearboxes due to longer life, and its classed as a sealed box.
