Quick question on oil filters...

I went to Vx and picked up a load of stuff today, of which I also picked up a couple of oil filters (£3.23 ea.).. I was surprised how small they are compared to the giant filter element I had on the 2.5TD.

How big are they meant to be? The P/N I have is 9192426 and they're maybe 2.5" tall and 2" diameter, tiny little filter elements to go inside the can on the car?

(Also picked up 4x5L fully syn oil, two cam cover gaskets, cam cover O-rings, timing belt kit and aux belt tensioner pulley.. that was painful!)

Feb 2011 at 13:41 Can't get to mine (garage in a mess), but sounds about right size. Diesels need larger filters as the oil takes away particulates.

Thanks TB - the parts were looked up via reg no. etc so I've no real reason to believe they're wrong, other than the "How small!?" moment I had when I opened the box Wink

I suppose they're ultimately a similar size to the inside of a standard spin-on filter, really.

I'll stop panicking Wink

Expensive morning, though, with that little lot plus a trip to Halfords to pick up a set of Torx sockets, spanners.. and then tempted into Tesco Home to buy a set of granite place mats for the table Grin

This is why I try not to leave the house!

I'm guessing this is the first Omega V6 (after 1999) oil filter you've done.

Any guesses for how tight the last person did the cap? Roll Eyes

It was a commercial garage who did the last one so probably 129376128376123ft/lb with an air gun!

Which reminds me.. what size is the socket for getting the plastic cap off? ISTR 32mm but I could be wrong on that (maybe that was the diseasal 2.2). Actually, that probably doesn't matter - I picked up a set of 19->32mm sockets as well.

I really must get a Halfords trade card!

From memory, 24mm.

DONT be tempted to stick a 3/8 rachet in the square hole at end for undoing (ok for torquing up afterwards), it WILL split.

Halfords Trade card tends to give approx 10% off tools. Shame you're not nearer, I have loads here, and a Halfords Trade card.

I think the 150pc socket set is £95 on trade (or was last time I bought one)

Don't worry, I won't stick anything in the hole Wink

I have a big selection of most other tools, I was just missing Torx sockets - it's been a long time since I owned a Vauxhall

(I had sets of Torx bits in 3/4" and 1/2" drive already .. no idea why, though! Grin

)

I need to go there on a day when it's all the girls working, I'm sure I can blag a trade card from one of them

Certainly before I go outfitting the new garage (once it's built!) with tool chests, because they're really not cheap!
