Hi all,
Got a problem thats doing my sweed in.
Ive got a 2001 omega elite, 22 diesel.
Its realy struggling to start and when it does it kicks loads and i mean loads of smoke out the back. Ive checked the intercooler ,the turbo, all the hoses to both.
Ive checked the glow plugs, the voltage to glow plugs, ive checked egr valve and map sensor. Ive done a head gasket test. Id love to hear from any one thats got any ideas.
My next action is to check the timing but struggling to find info on the timing. Hope some one can help cheers Aggy

Feb 2011 at 18:48 What do you expect from a tractor?! Sorry, had to get that one in! Know nothing about diesels myself, but I know if one is pushing out heavy blue/black smoke it is due to the engine being dirty. Probably signs then it needs a good overhaul/service. Just my uneducated opinion though

The 2.2 injectors can't be stripped the 2.5 can. What colour is the smoke(black,white or blue) Whens the last time it got a service and a good blast up the M-way

The smoke suggests that the fuel is reaching the cylinders. So perhaps either the glowplugs are not getting properly heated (poor connection) or not enough air is getting through (blocked air filter or collapsed hose). Sounds like you've eliminated these potential causes.

Only other option I can think of is that the fuel is being injected at the wrong time (you make reference to timing). Could this be a faulty crank position sensor or the fuel injection pump out of alignment?

A code reading might say something.

Possibly but the glowplugs on the 2.2's only come on in very low temp cold starts.

Had exactly the same problem with my DTi when I bought it.

Would crank over for ages and ages with gray smoke pouring out of the exhaust and eventually splutter into life.

Checked the glowplugs and even though they were glowing when tested on the bench, they were not hot enough.

A new set of glowplugs for 20 quid and it now starts first time every time Cheesy

Just a tip, the glow plug relay stays energised for about 60 seconds after the dashboard indication has extinguished and keeps the plugs glowing until cylinder bore temperature is adequate

For the sake of £20 I'd change the plugs - only takes 15 mins
