Fitted Cam gaskets. Question?

Quite chuffed with myself today. I have fitted new cam gaskets (biggest engine job I have ever attempted) All is well, no leaks and no parts left over

Here's my question. While I had the Intake off I noticed a small amount of "Sludge"? around the thermostat housing, (didn't look like mayo)

I have no oil in coolant nor is there any water in the oil. could the housing have a small leak or could it be early signs of an oil cooler failure.

Tomorrow I will be doing the cambelt/kit. Wish me luck

Feb 2011 at 18:56 Well done mate - definately a "knack" to getting cam covers back on properly particularly passenger side! Sludge around thermostat housing probably sign of a leak - is it wet? Are you loosing coolant? If oil cooler failure you will find oil (sludge) in coolant. HTH

If by Sludge you mean oily, make sure that the Oil Cooler Pipe Bolts are tightened properly... I have had quite a few with loose bolts. I would change the O rings if they were loose just so you don't have the issue again.

If by Sludge you mean the furry water based it could be that your thermostat housing is leaking slightly Thumbs Up!

if this is the case check the oil cooler plate isn't leaking whilst there Thumbs Up!

Passenger side was a bit harder. Must have the "Knack" as it went back on at first attempt Grin

Yes it's wet, have been losing a little coolant, nothing drastic. Defo no sludge in coolant. Looks like I need to get a thermostat housing gasket.

Roly, if you want to borrow a locking kit and the Cam belt change DVD then give me a shout as I'm only 30 minutes or so down the road from you.

Good luck, take your time, don't rush.

Bag up and label all the parts that you take off. I personally struggled with the 'R' Clips, so I'd suggest buying an assortment of jubulee clips to replace them with.

Any electrical connectors, number them first before removing them. ie; a bit of masking tape on each end, then number 1 written on each piece of masking tape. next connector, label each end as number 2, etc, etc.

Take your time, don't rush, pay attention and you should be alright.

Thank you for the offer, I already have them. I took my time with the cam gaskets. When working on cars I'm slow and steady, just like when I'm with a woman. Cheesy
