Defunct auto box (2.2 petrol Y reg)

The box box will change up from 1st if put into 1st manually. It jolts into 2nd when the gear shift is moved into drive. It then changes smoothly into 3rd, however the revs are corresponding to it being in 4th. If the the gear shift is pulled into 3rd there is no change in revs. So I suspect it goes straight from 1st to 3rd when the the gear shift is put into drive hence the jolt and then it changes smoothly into 4th. It will not change down other than moving the gear shift manualy. The torque lock appears to work as the engine turns over at 2000 rpm @ 50 mph & I am getting  26-27 mpg with rural/urban driving. Opel dealer says  box needs to be replaced. Its done 125k. It seems strange that it should be defunct with such low mileage. Anyone any ideas or should I drive it to a scrap yard. Undecided

Fisrt thing to check is the fluid level & a possible fluid change. One of the solenoids in the box controls the change from 1st to 2nd then from 3rd to 4th (another one controls 2-3) could possibly be that one. Easy enough to change with the sump off

Selector may be OK, still sounds like solenoid problem

remove the rear sump the 1-2 solenoid is the one nearest the side of the box, resistance should be 17.5-18.5 ohms.
