Im just about to buy a 2.5 V6 Omega Elite that when revved sounds like it has a blowing exhaust.

I've checked the exhaust and its not blowing anywhere. The chap I'm buying it off mentions it might be the pipe that can be taken off as its not really needed that might be blowing??? or it might be the manifold gasket? How likely is it that its either of them? It does feel down on power he says so don't know if thats a clue to the cause?

It sounds like either the exhaust or exhaust manifold IS blowing Roll Eyes

........and a pipe that isn't needed could be the cause? What is that all about?

Unless you can get the miggy for a very good price, or at least factor in the cost of a new exhaust / replacement manifold gasket, I personally would walk away! Wink

Wouldn't trust the seller from what you are saying. He MUST know really what is up! Roll Eyes

Hi,

Well its an X Reg elite (newer shape) with cream leather and 114k miles , with 11 months MOT and 5 months tax for £390. Body in very good nick. Its definitely 100% not blowing on the exhaust as its been up on a ramp with the local kwikfit and they said definitely not blowing on the exhaust and maybe manifold or this pipe?

What do you think?

Mar 2011 at 15:51 Hiya, that does seem very cheap if the rest of the car is in good nick. But you will need to factor in the cost of new exhaust/manifold possibly. Its the owners ignorance of the problem that would put me off tbh

Well that is a realistic price, but as said you should factor in a new exhaust and/or exhaust mainfold gasket. Dependant on Service History (proved) also factor in a cam belt change, £400 just for that alone if you cannot do it yourself, plus possible cam gasket change and breather clean.

There are specialist mechanics on here who can do it all for a good price, but it is safer to think the £390 is not the only cost. With a miggy (Omega) it is so often not!

But once again £390 is a good price, and if you can do your own mechanics then it shouldn't be too much of a problem or cost Cheesy

Is it the little 4" rubber pipe thats the problem on the long metal piece or the long metal piece? Matt

For what your paying for the car, it sounds like it will be a good buy, as long as you have budgeted another few hundred to spend on it after youve bought it.

Worst case scenario is that you have a blocked catalytic converter and back pressure is forcing its way past the non return valve in one of the stainless steel pipes. Hot exhaust gas will burn through the rubber pipe very quickly.

Alternatively one of the non return valves may be stuck open or the hose may have failed due to age Undecided

Being down on power does sound like a blocked cat unfortunately Sad
