Top mount n/s/f?
24. Mar 2011 at 00:00

I am getting a very annoying deep squeak from n/s/f. It is not present when cold but gets worse the longer  I drive. It is slight with bumps but very loud when steering left to right.
It has just gone through MOT (brake pipe advisory only).
I thought it maybe steering idler, purely because of location of noise, but have ruled that out now.
Has anybody had this particular symptom from a top mount? Is there a method of checking for sure?

can'T imagine why it would be the top mount to me it sounds like the wishbone squeking but i'm sure someone who knows more will be along shortly, p.s why do you suspect the top mount?

the funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it

The top mount seed was planted by someone else. To me it sounds lower down. From inside the car it comes from passenger footwell but could be reverberating down the strut.

Nah. Had drop links before and they give more of a clonk over bumps at low speed. Also they would of showed up on MOT. I would say it is more a steering component with a secondary suspension role, in theory Shocked

If the bearing at the base of the top mount is sticking, then it might cause the main body of the mounting to try to turn with the strut, which in turn would protest hence a squeak. Undecided

Would have thought that the bearing would become noticeably rough first though. Undecided

the reason why i say it could be wishbones is because i had an audi a4 which had the same problem (production problem) and steering left to right would be a groaning noise gotta say top bearing mount could be a problem but not one i've heard of before have a listen while someone else steers left to right.

Place a hand on the n/s top mount while someone else turns the wheel from lock to lock. Then repeat for the other side for comparison. Any roughness should be easily enough felt.

HTH

Al. Thumbs Up!

Put the front end on axle stands and turn the wheels if it creaks then a good chance the top mount or the bearings
