To continue the saga. Took the car to my tame mechanic to have the selector switch removed & cleaned. He duly removed it took it appart & low & behold it was full of dirt & the contacts were worn away. One 'phone call later a replacement switch sourced & fitted (hopes rise). Test the car . Starts off in 1st but shudders & moves away at the speed of a Sinclair C5. Check oil level, its low so put in a litre, so hopes rise again. Off the hoist to test, again pulls away again like a Sinclair C5 shuddering. Admit defeat. The torque converter is shot & no it has never had a tow hitch on it. However it was used as a taxi for a year. So it turns out that the Forum & the gearbox boys are both right. Don't know how a box in can be knackered in 125k. The Rover Sterling I had did 212k & the autobox was still going strong. Cry

Apr 2011 at 16:44 Unlikely to be the torque converter. Not much to fail in that. Have you checked the basics - fluid level and condition? Any debris in the autobox sumps? Does the car drive OK if you manually shift through the gears using the lever? Kevin

Apr 2011 at 02:32 Any cam sensor fault? Oof recommended service interval is 60k for auto box ATF dex 3. Do not believe vx when they say it's a sealed unit, it is not. Remove the sumps and check for debris IMO.

Decided to cut my losses. Would not start in drive without shuddering violently. Had an offer of an auto box for 250 which had only done 15k. Felt it was the best option rather than keeping spending money to find out what was wrong with the old box on the car. Now the replacement box is fitted it is working fine & the fuel consumption has improved by 5 mpg. Thumbs Up!
