omega auto box problem, pls help
26. Mar 2011 at 14:34

hi, i own a 2000 omega 2.5 elite estate which i bought about 4mths ago off a very good friend so i know the history of the car, in december 09 it had a £1000 gearbox rebuild and has had no problems until this wk, firstly i noticed the traction control and ABS lights were staying on and the speedo stopped working but after a short time all was ok again, this happened a few times and also noticed the steering was very heavy? after a motorway journey yesterday i was caught in some heavy traffic then the car stalled, i restarted the car selected drive and the car lurched forward and vibrated very badly, i managed to park it up and left it over night, i checked the ATF this morning and it seems to have plenty in! i have managed to get the car back home and it drove faultless ??????? ... please help

The symptoms your car have are classic ABS ECU failure and fortunately are nothing to do with your gearbox. Servotronic (speed sensitive) steering, speedo & TC are all driven by your ABS. You need to either get yours repaired (BBE Repair around £130) or you need A N Other from a similar car ie V6  Thumbs Up!

Why do you say you have a gearbox problem? Huh The faults above are nothing to do with the gearbox and are all ABC ECU related.  Thumbs Up!

the main problem was the car stalling and then when started again it lurched forward and vibrated badly which i explained in my original post, the car was not driveable at all until this morning when i presume everything has cooled down? obviously the TC and ABS  lights been on are just a coincidence, but the car does have a gearbox problem  Sad

Hi

You seem to have a couple of issues here. If you have a look in the maintenance guides there is lots of help. For example checking gearbox oil level accurately when warm and running..

As Andy says the steering, ABS light and speedo are classic ABS ECU failure. Common problem on 98 onward cars . Again there is a good how to guide on the forum. Fiddly job but easy enough- no brake fluid involved. I would personally recommend a recon unit as any S/H ones around are likley to fail too before long (I know this from experience being on my third!).

The juddering and stalling could be a number of things. A good starting point is to do a paperclip test and post up the results. Again have a look in the guides for a how to. It might be your ICV (Idle control valve) needs a clean - very easy enough to do. Might be a failing MAF or a misfire from oil in plug wells from rocker cover gasket failure or plug leads. Need a bit more info to help on that.

Do you know when the breathers were last cleaned and the cambelt last changed when you say you have the history?

How did you do this? The car needs to be level with the engine running and the gearbox warm, if you just remove the fill/level plug without the engine running then you'll appear to have gallons too much.  Wink Wink
You still haven't convinced me your g/box is goosed.  Wink Thumbs Up!

Pull your HT leads from the driver's side plugs & have a look for yourself. Just because it's had a 'full service history' doesn't say it doesn't have any faults.  Wink Wink
I've just done a cam cover for a friend who said the same thing ......... ie "it's just had the cam covers done before I bought it" all the driver's side plug wells were full of oil.  Huh  Wink
