Which exhust and which cams on 3.0?
05. Apr 2011 at 09:44

Greetings and salutations.

My exhaust is rattling and rusty so I am going to change it. Also I think I have some leaks around the cover above cams (do not know how it is called in english) - is is dirty of oil after faster drive and the computer is suggesting checking oil level (checked - full) - so I would like to try some better cams during gasket change.
I would like to ask for advice.
For exhaust, I would like to use 3.2 exhaust manifold, so can I use 3.2 exhaust too? I have 3.0 pre-facelift sedan now. Also, is there some other gain to use stainless steel except the long life?
For cams, I have found only those: http://www.courtenaysport.co.uk/buy-online/shop-by-category/tuning-components/up...
Are there any experience with those, or are there some others?

Thank you for any response Smiley

Firstly the cover over the cams... It's called the cam cover. Thumbs Up!

Cam cover gaskets failing is common. Replace them with genuine GM parts (pattern parts don't appear to last in this application).

Ensure the breathers are cleaned out at the same time.

There's a guide to this job here:  http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152564281

I don't see why a 3.2 exhaust wouldn't work but it's got 2 cats instead of one, of course. It may be more restrictive. 3.2 manifolds are reckoned to flow better than the 3.0 type so this is a worthwhile change. Some modification of the cat pipe is required to fit it to the new manifolds.

The main advantage with a stainless exhaust is longevity, of course. Some may flow better but, to be honest, the cats and manifolds are probably the weakest link so the rest of the exhaust probably has a limited effect.

I don't recall anyone having reported changing to hotter cams on this engine. There is also no information about those cams at all on their web site. If anything, they might give a little more top end power at the expense of some low-down flexibility but might require porting of the heads to give their full potential.

A better first tuning step is to chip the ECU, IMHO.

Thanks a lot Smiley
Embarrassed cam cover  Embarrassed Who would say that? Smiley
So modified (taking off 5mm, is it right? ) 3.0 mild steel exhaust on 3.2 manifold would be better?
The breathers should be cleaned (I am planning it Smiley ) during cam cover gasket change.  The ECU upgrade is also in my plan. Just thought that if I have to take off cam cover anyway I would try those cams too. But if there is not much use of it, I will probably skip it Smiley

Speaking if ECU upgrade, is there some recommended one?
