i have an omega 2.02 cd auto. recently developed problem with gearbox, when driving car gearbox gives a bump then loses power.automatic gearbox warning comes up on dashboard,can put it into manual and drive ok.i turn off the engine then turn it back on and problem has gone.        mechanic said i need a gearbox and quoted £1000 for the job. any advise would be welcome.

You need to find someone local to you that can read the error code for you gearbox. You won't be guessing then about what's upsetting the g/box.
Find another mechanic. He clearly want to do what will be the easiest & most profitable for him.
