ignition warning light
26. Apr 2011 at 00:31

Ignition warning light glowing very dimly at all times when ignition switched on. Does not vary with engine speed. No amps being received at battery.
Have tried cleaning spring contacts on alternator regulator/brush pack as recommended on OOF without result.
Is this likely to be alternator fault or wiring fault? Any ideas please?
Car is 1998 2.5 cdx with Bosch 120 amp alternator.

I had a similar fault and it turned out to be the crimped joint on the positive side of the battery, where the cable is crimped to the battery terminal. The terminal/cable may get hot to touch when the engine is running as a useful pointer.
Not the same car, but hope it helps. Seems a common weak spot.
Failing that, you will have to get a meter out and check the voltages, there is an excellent "How To" guide on here, in the maintenance or common problems section.

Could also be a diode fault in the alternator.

£15 for a regulator would have done it Wink

All now up and running with new alternator, new rear subframe bushes, new handbrake cables etc etc.. At £39+ for a new auxilliary drive belt this was almost half the cost of the alternator. Be careful of the spec for V6 alternators offered on the internet - many are only 100amp.
New MOT this morning - the rusty silver arrow flies again.
