Car rolls backwards whilst in drive
28. Apr 2011 at 20:10

I've noticed that my car has started to roll backwards slightly whilst in drive and waiting to pull away on hills. Does that make sense? Also, if I park facing down hill, I struggle to get the car into reverse from park. Normal? or should I start worrying about the gearbox. I can feel a reading of the small print in the cars 3 month warranty coming on!!

Nothing unusual ime

It will eventually roll back on a steep enough hill. Having said that they do benefit from ATF service. How many miles on it, and any sign of the auto box being serviced in the history?

Shes got 140,000 on the clock. Looking thru the service book, there is no sign of an auto trans oil change. Guessing this is bad.

Captain,

When parking on a downward or upward slope ..... stop, keep foot on footbrake. Apply handbrake. Put gearbox in neutral and take foot off footbrake. Now put her in park. On returning to car, she will easily slip out of park to drive as the weight on the car is not on the gearbox as would be the case if you stop on a slope, put her in park and then apply handbrake.

Thats damn good advice Paddy. Never thought of that, comes from only driving manual cars, well thats the excuse i'm going to stick with anyway.

Thanks again

Try it on your nearest hill !

I had to instruct my wife on how to park my Omega on our down slope driveway. She couldn't move it out of park having parked it earlier with the near 2 ton of Omega weight on it !

Bless her. Sticks to her manual Focus now.

Yep, takes the strain on the hand brake, rather than the the park mechanism. And TB hasn't done his little speech on not forgetting to use said hand brake.  Thumbs Up!      Grin
