thinking of getting a chip

not posted for a while, thought id give a little update, just got back from a weeks holiday in st ives, 900mile round trip plus running around and the old omega didnt miss a beat, averaged 35mpg there and back.

i have been thinking of chipping it though can anyone tell me if it will hit my cruseing fuel economy or improve it and is there any chip suppliers i should avoid, been looking at the ones on ebay claiming around 20hp

Isn't the whole point of a 'super'chip that it plays with the ECU? Thats where you stick it afterall! Undecided

But yes chips are normally placed to sync with the ECU.

Phooeyyyyy BIG time.
Tried one and improvement in anything was barely noticable so I took it back out and sold it on otherwise it would have been near on 200 notes wasted.
Bought a miggy that I thought had loads of power and ran it for years with no problems then came the day I had to get it looked at. Best bet is get someone who knows his eggs to give it a once over to put right what is wrong - probably related to a badly setup EM or valve timing etc.
Had mine done and the car was totally different afterwards with bags more power and a far better response on the move.
Chips are a waste of space meant for those with more money than sense in my humble opinion. If you have money to burn donate to the forum!

In terms of economy, Ive chipped a few 3.0 MV6's in the past, using Superchips, Courtenay, Ex Plod eproms and some from Germany / Poland.

The first two gave improved MPG particularly noticeable on a long cruise, a 3.0 MV6 Manual Estate (Superchip) went from never doing more than 34 to 38 MPG (28 around town) and a 3.0 MV6 Auto Estate (Courtenay) from never doing more than 33 to hitting 40 MPG (25 around town). Cant honestly say I noticed any significant improvement in performance on these two.

The Explod one I got my hands on did make MPG worse but it did come with widened throttle bodies couldn’t get more than 33Mpg on a run and around 19 in town, but did give a noticeable improvement in performance though.

The ones from Germany or Poland didn’t seem to make bugger all difference to MPG or performance.

All the chips Ive used have never thrown the EML on, and would I pay 300 / 400 quid for one, No.

A bit of both, on a long run on there off the MID, but I do keep mileage trips with each fill up and keep the MID trip and Gals used going for around 1000 miles or more then do a tally up every month or so, tbh there not far out or even bang on sometimes.

On the xplod no mid so done on petrol fill ups and clock mileage, if I can afford the petrol!

Out of intrest the Xplod gets driven as an empty car, where as the Estates would have been loaded up with tools and heavy crap in the back, so they might firm a bit better if driven as empty cars on a run.

Talking of MPG and petrol cost, God, Im realy starting to like my little 1.4 LPG mini Tigra as a run around!! Embarrassed
