Snapped Cambelt...
08. May 2011 at 17:38

My camblet has snapped on my 3.2 V6 Elite.

Are they easy to change? Im thinking of doing it on my drive over the nights this week.

a- Why has it snapped?
b - Is it a common thing?
c - Do I need axle stands to do the job?
d - Do I need to take the engine out?
e - Do I need new oil when doing this job?
What oil do you recommend?
f - Do I need to have my bottom end r-skimmed due to cambelt failure?
g - Whats the best cambelt to get and how much are they?

Cry

Your belt has probably snapped because it's been there for to long, the engine will need both heads removed and bent valves and damaged valve guides replaced before you need to worry about fitting a new cam belt kit.you will also need a locking tool to set up the new belt, quite a big job really.

A pair of good used heads is the realistic option. If your doing the work yourself, budget for approx. £400 worth of parts. Wink

It may be worth speaking to daz aka darth loo knee. Not only may he have some used heads but he could recon them for you and maybe fit them if you are not too far away from stoke.  Much more reasonable and more competent than most garages

a) Probably been on for too long, or incorrectly fitted. Could just be unlucky
b) Only if not done on time, and properly
c) If there is valve damage, yes
d) No
e) No, but makes sense to do oil and coolant at same time
f) No
g) Anywhere, needs to be a cambelt kit, and you need a proper locking/timing kit to do the job. It CANNOT be done without, no matter how much of a hero you reckon you are.

Some would say you need your bottom end smacked if you left it longer than 40K or 4 years  Wink

Daz wont have any heads. He was called out to a 3.2 last week which had the same problem. He put the owner in touch with me, and I sold him my 3.2 heads.
Worth getting in touch with him all the same, as he will definitely do a better job than a garage will, if oyu can source a pair of heads.
