OK, personal preference is for an Auto... The Omega manual box isn't the best in terms of throw etc...

Some cars suit an Auto box, some don't... The Omega definitely does Thumbs Up!

I agree,I'm not a lover of the omega manual box either although in most cars I do prefer a manual cog swapper Thumbs Up!

My old 2.5 was an auto and while I liked the convenience I felt the ratios were poorly chosen (for UK roads) and strangled the engine. I definately prefer the manual I have now! However a modern 6 or 7 (or 8!) speed auto fitted to an omega would be a different story...

Having had both, I prefer the manual...but then I like to be in control and use my intelligence to decide what gear to use and not some naff old 8 bit micro.

Hi, I'm looking to buy another Omega. My last one was a bit of a nightmare due to changing just about every damn sensor on it just to find out that it was the gearbox at fault from the beginning, probably the thrust bearing. which i had mentioned to me but refused to believe. anyway the old bus has gone and i am missing the omega badly. At present i am driving a motorised rollerskate called a vectra. Sorry lads but i'm not impressed. anyway to get to what i need to know is which is less problematic the auto or the manual gearbox. I am a bit wary of the auto after my last experience. maybe it was just one out of a lot that gives grief or is it commonplace.
Would appreciate a bit of advice. Undecided Sad Undecided Undecided

Manuals still have issues with dual mass fly wheel(£££), clutch wear and need the box oil changed, as they do. We don't see many manual box threads on here I suppose, but then there are relatively few manual omegas about. I find the travel on the gear lever sloppy and excessive, and the ones I've driven the clutch bites right at the top of it's travel which I find irritating as I like to keep my heal on the floor rather than bang my knee off the dash every time, so to speak.

Not sure if the autos thrust washer issue was a problem on early models? And theres servicing the ATF to consider every 60k odd. Other than that just press the pedal and away you go. Big heavy car like the omega I really don't miss the manual box at all, ESP in the south and all the traffic round here. Although take up from brakes to throttle at the apex is a bit poor when cracking on it has to be said. Plus if the worst happens Ar35's on here go for 50 to a100 at most, with 4 hours labour at £50 an hour with my man round the corner it's not the end of the world.

How much to replace a dmf? Thrust washer is no biggy to fix tbh.

We dont see many manual box threads because they dont suffer many issues.

Like the auto box they are supposed to be 'sealed for life' of course, just like the Autos, a fluid change is a very worth while activity (and easy, quick and cheap....unlike the autos  Grin).

DMF's are a VERY rare failure on the Omega, I have only ever seen them on the diesels (and even then its not a common occurance).

The clutches are huge and mega thick, they easily see 100K plus miles on the diesels with 200K+ on the petrols but, that is always going to be dependent on the driver!

And on the Auto's, the thrust washer was never fixed, its an issue they all have.

So reliability wise, its no contest.  Thumbs Up!

Reality is, its all down to what you prefer. I like to be in control and like to push them hard on rare occasions and hence its a manual all the way for me (as the Auto does not allow you to shift effectively even in manual mode)  Thumbs Up!

Rumour?  Huh Huh Fact was that the lad in the parts dept said that he supplied the work shop loads of DMF for plod Omegas ............ where does rumour come into it?
You can't just drop the clutch in an auto so they might have lasted longer or they might not. Plenty of auto white plod around to check up on.

Because its come from a Vx dealer and they would not know the difference between an Omega, Vectra, Astra flywheel.

I know my contact used to maintain a lot of Leicestershire vehicles and never did anything relating to manual transmissions (or Autos but then they only had 1 auto in the force).

I do know that my ex-plod estate on 70K miles had a goosed thrust washer and brake band.

And we all now the auto weaknesses

autos suit relaxed driving better which is what the omega was designed for

manuals are stronger internals but can be quite obstrutive to use

ehd of the day you pays your money and takes your chiose

personally i prefer autos and ive never had a problem on the 5 omegas ive had with auots

As inept as some workshops are, I reckon they'd know the difference when they tried to fit a solid Astra flywheel to a V6 Omega  Wink Wink

Quite a common topic on here and as always, it's purely a matter of preference. I like auto when in heavy traffic or motorway jams but prefer manual for all other driving situations. My auto really pee's me of when it changes down a gear for absolutley no reason other than slight alterations in the road - either very slightly up or downhill (usually between 30-45mph). Also less control if driving spiritedly and lower mpg.
