Might not be the rear bearings after all.........
12. May 2011 at 07:31

......mechanic drove it yesterday and and said it sounds more like the diff than the bearings.
So, if this is confirmed, are rear diffs from breakers worth installing or should I go new? Undecided

(I guess this is a case of Mega-bucks Cry vs quite cheap Roll Eyes)

Any thoughts?

Matthew

Will be doing that when the Car's up in the air to check what's going on - but not yet.

If the diff oil is not at correct level/volume (don't know haw it's measured) is the seal/plug an easy replace?

Generally robust enough, assuming it has oil in.  I'd be inclined to get one from a breaker - non LSD ones seem to be thrown away as nobody wants them.

Remember, the ratios vary in the diff though.

Personally I'd do what TB said though, if it needed a diff - go s/hand.. these things aren't exactly common points of failure (unless they're run dry of oil, that is).

Had a second hand diff put on my old girl (£110-00p Delivered)
a few months back and touch wood is running fine and very quiet indeed instead of that continous humming noise.
OH, and heres the main thing, I phoned up a VX main dealer for a laugh just to find out how much a new diff on mine would cost, 2.5 V6 auto.

                       about,      £2000-00p (no lie) Shocked
