Cambelt change query
16. May 2011 at 14:12

Belt on, double mark on belt lines up ok on crank, all 4 markings on the belt sit one tooth forward from the timing marks on the cam pulleys. I dont think its anything to be concerned about, but best to check.I suppose I can try moving the belt back so they line up, but maybe there will be too much slack between crank and tensioner then? Undecided
Cant finish the job today anyway, as my torx bits are 3/8 drive and my torgue wrench (to torque idler bolts to 40n/m) is 1/2" drive. My 1/2" to 3/8" reducer is bust, so I have to get another on the way to work hopefully. Sad
Still, at least the water pump turned up this morning, so thats on.

Oh yes. Thumbs Up!
All 4 cams were slightly out when I checked before removing the old belt - by 1/2 to 3/4 of a tooth each.

Will do Paul. Wink
Got the belt sitting nicely lined up on the cams before I came to work.I think if I had left it as it was I may well have had a problem of the belt being too tight to tension properly, when the time came to do that part Undecided. One thing which concerned me a bit is that the marks on the belt dont line up quite perfectly with the cutout on the oil pump casing. Its nowhere near a tooth out, but one of the white lines, lines up with the centre of the cutout, whereas I would have thought that the black part between the two white lines would have lined up with the centre of the cutout.
If I retard the crank so that they line up in the centre, the crank lock is about half an inch back from the waterpump.
Slightly confusing. Undecided

Im wondering if our ebay bargain waterpumps are not quite the correct dimensions, which could mean the crank lock not in quite the correct place ?  Undecided
Might compare the new one with the old when I get home from work in the morning. Wink

Don't worry about the cutout marks on the back of the camcover - they are inaccurate and only the roughest guide. Its the horseshoe tool that is important (and another reason you cant do without the locking kit, not matter how big you think your penis is)

I wasnt referring to the cutouts on the camcovers Jaime, I was referring to the cutout at the back of the crank (I believe its in the oil pump housing). Wink

With the lock on, and the 'flats' on pump at same angle as right side ot cranklock, is the cutouts on crank pulley exactly downwards?

Hard to tell from just feel, but I think so. Will have to have a careful deatailed check (if I can find time between shifts)tomorrow.
This is why I wanted to get the job done at the weekend, before I started a run of nightshifts, but it was not to be.
I started it early this morning, but I knew the waterpump was on its way, so then didnt rush until the pump arrived - when I then in formed the parcelfarce driver that he was teeling porkies about attempting to deliver it on Friday, and also didnt believe that he ran out of cards to post through doors on Friday as well. Ignore the belt markings if you need to... As TB says, just use the horseshoe. As long as the crank lock is in the right place (can't see there being a w/p fault as they wouldn't have been shipped in SKF packaging if they were rejects Wink) and the cams line up with the horse shoe both before turning it over and after (I always go 4 turns of the crank. i.e. 2 complete revolutions of the engine) then it'll be fine Thumbs Up!

(I don't need to add that it's the locking/timing tool that you're using, not the marks on the belt as they won't line up after turning the engine over anyway Roll Eyes)

Like I said... If you get stuck I'll nip down Thumbs Up! Thumbs Up!

OK Paul, thanks for the reassurance. Crank lock tight against the pump, cam pulley marks aligned with nothches on aligning tool - perfick. Smiley.........dont think I will get stuck tbh, just worried a bit about the markings not quite being where they oughta.
Would like to think I will finish it tomorrow, but depends on what level of sleep deprivation I can endure. Wink Roll Eyes
As an aside, I have been losing a bit of coolant recently and found out today that its somewhere in the valley and running down the front of the engine. So when the cambelt is sorted its off with the plenum/ fanimold etc..... but at least I know which area to look in now. cooler plate or coolant bridge etc. Thumbs Up!
