Is it the Crankshaft Sensor???

This is the 2.5TD....

The symptoms...

Car won't start!!!
When the engine turns over, the rev counter bounces around 1500-2500 rpm

With the sensor disconnected, the engine does start almost immediately, although may cut straight out afterwards...
When is started, I can reconnect the sensor and it runs smoothly...

When the engine is shut off, it will restart if it is done shortly after the initial switch off, otherwise its sensor disconnect to restart...

I have had a good check around to try to make sure that there is no interference from the starter motor, etc... I have tried sheilding the sensor from the starter, which made no difference...

Reading the codes in this case I don't believe will help me due to disconnecting the sensor to get the engine started, which will guarantee the '19'...

Does anyone have a spare Crank sensor for the 2.5TD that I can try to see if this does indeed sort the problem...

I personally steer clear of diesel cars where I can but still thought if the crank sensor was unplugged it would not start..

May 2011 at 22:58 Starting with the crank sensor disconnected is a trait of the diesel (at least in this case)... What I cannot afford to do is to buy a replacement crank sensor and be in no better a position...

Ok... The conclusion...

As I couldn't figure what the exactly what the problem was and I was reluctant to buy a new crank sensor to try in it, I decided to pull out the inlet manifold, to enable a nice close look at the area of engine concerned...

So with the manifold removed, the crank sensor still sitting slighty obscured by the starter motor (which appeared nice and tight to the touch)... Next step remove the starter motor to give me a nice clear sight of the screw to remove for the sensor (not feeling happy about removing the sensor due to not having the correct tool to put it back in with should the holding block come out)...

Started to remove the starter and the cause of the problem became apparent... A bolt had worked loose (for some reason a hex head bolt had been put in the starter which is a bitch to get properly tightened... Removed the starter and found I had nice access to the business end of the crank sensor, which I could feel had no furring, so I just gave it a quick light sweep with some emery cloth (which came away nice and clean)...

Pinned it all back together (hoping that I had found the cause and solved it), a right bloody nuisance just to test the engine, but....

Hands covered in skanky oil, my wife just happened to come out, so I got her to sit in the car to try to start it...

It started nice and easily... So... The problem is a bolt that keeps working loose... Next job track down a suitable replacement bolt!

May 2011 at 20:29 that top bolts is a bitch!!! but pretty sure it should have a nut on the other side!!! has yours not? every one i have done always has nuts and bolts with hex heads on them?

May 2011 at 20:42 It hasn't, but, I think when I pay a visit to the scrappy, I will try to get some longer bolts that will take a nut on the other end.... I was thinking along those lines earlier though...

strange!!! cos the nut is the bitch to hold as it sits starter motor side i usually superglue it to the starter motor inset the bolt very gently then when you tighten the bolt suffiently the superglue lets go, was just working out how many have done and its 5 or 6 and all had the nuts and bolts on them???? range from 94 to 98 and year 2000 so i think something is wrong there, however when you drop the nut of the top bolt it does go behind the starter whch means removing it agin to get it out, so maybe that happened at a previous time in your cars life?

Possible... I know that I am responsible for the loss of one of the bolts, so, I replaced it with a normal bolt (all that was to hand)....
